Several years ago, we offered this delicious washed coffee from Nyeri, a town in the central highlands of Kenya with cool temperatures and fertile soil. We are delighted to have sourced and roasted it again for you to brew and enjoy.

Karogoto is a wet mill situated in Nyeri, Kenya. It is one of four wet mills owned by the Tekangu Farmers Cooperative Society. Karogoto itself has a total of 1054 active contributing farmers.  Nyeri is home to thousands of smallholder farmers who own on average 0.5 hectares of land. Because individual yields are relatively small, most farmers rely on cooperative wet mills to process their coffee. There are numerous wet mills in Kenya, and farmers have the flexibility to choose which wet mill they deliver their cherries to.

Once the cherries are delivered to the wet mill, they are sorted through flotation, separating any underripe or damaged fruit. The ripe cherries are then pulped and placed in fermentation tanks filled with fresh water, where they rest for 8 to 10 hours overnight. This softens the mucilage, which is then washed off in channels early the next morning. The cherries are then transferred to raised African beds, where they dry slowly over 2 to 3 weeks until reaching a moisture content of 10–12%.

This coffee features classic Kenyan notes of blackberry, complemented by juicy flavours of peach and elegant notes of black tea. As expected from Kenya, known for its high-quality washed coffees, this coffee delivers a crisp acidity and clean, balanced finish.
