Green Grape / Honeysuckle / Candyfloss
Reaching our 200th coffee offering feels like a milestone worth marking with something special. We’ve roasted and shared a lot of coffees over the years, from producers and places we’ve been lucky to work with, and we wanted number 200 to be one we were particularly excited about.
With the help of Ethiopian coffee importers Coffee Legends, we found exactly that in this beautifully complex, floral and delicate washed coffee from Sidama. In the cup, you'll find vibrant green grape acidity, soft honeysuckle florals and a delicate candyfloss-like sweetness. Elegant, clean and drinkable all day, it’s a coffee we’re especially excited to share as a celebration of how far we've come and of all the coffees still to come.
Producer
This is the second year we are featuring coffee from Daye Bensa, a family-run producer and exporter based in Sidama, who work with smallholder farmers through a network of washing stations across the region. This lot was grown in small plots of land around Malawo in Arbogena, where coffee remains the primary cash crop for the community.
Region
At elevations up to 2,330 metres, Arbegona is one of Ethiopia’s highest coffee-growing areas. Combined with substantial rainfall and dense vegetation, the cool highland conditions slow cherry maturation, producing dense beans with the sweetness, complexity and aromatic character associated with coffees from this region.
Process
Farmers deliver ripe cherries to Daye Bensa's washing station, where they are sorted through flotation to remove lower-density fruit. After sorting, the cherries are depulped and dried on raised African beds with mesh nets for approximately 12–15 days, where they are regularly turned every 30 mins to ensure even drying.
